Unfortunately not everything that is ORGANIC is
necessarily a healthy food choice. Organic means
different things depending on the food item in question,
and definitely is preferable to its non-organic
equivalent. It often means the food item is free of
pesticides, herbicides, hormones and antibiotics.
However, a healthy food is not only about the absence
of added toxins, but the processing of each ingredient and choice of
ingredients. Let’s take an example from a
box of organic cookies found in a health food store. The first
two ingredients
listed are
organic wheat flour and organic evaporated cane juice.
The, first ingredient, wheat flour, is a refined grain
not a whole grain. This means it is lacking or deficient
in many of the nutrients one would find in whole grain
flour such as fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, chromium,
strontium and more. The second ingredient is
sugar, and even
if it is organic still disrupts blood sugar levels and
contributes to the many chronic disease such as
diabetes.
Marketing
companies know that most consumers judge a product by
the big print on the box and not the fine print.
Be a smart shopper and read
all the ingredients. Choose a box of organic
cookies made with whole grains and with minimal sugar
levels. |
